A friend, when asked
‘How you doing?’
will always reply,
without a grin
‘It could be worse’
and of course he’s
right, but it’s like a
cheap trick to fool
yourself that you’re
doing okay prepared
to some stranger
some place else
and although true
it isn’t very helpful
and doesn’t do
anything to elevate
self-esteem or value
in a world where the
vultures are forever
and of course,
you know most
of them by name.
